ABOUT MEMBERSHIP

Calling all East New York and Brownsville residents! We are building a movement to stop the violent displacement of working class Black & Brown residents from our community. Join us and directly fight for permanent affordability in your community.

FOR US, BY US.

  • People who live or work in East New York or Brownsville can become voting Members of the ENYCLT. These members who pay dues vote for Community Board members, as well as on strategic decisions at Member Meetings.

    People who do not live or work in East New York or Brownsville can become Ally Members. Ally members cannot vote at Member Meetings or elect board members.

    • Every member has the right to nominate and participate in the election of the Board of Directors.

    • Collectively decide on ENYCLT’s priorities and vote on these decisions during general membership meetings.

    • Get special access to free skills and knowledge-based trainings on an ongoing basis.

    • Plan and participate in community building events like walking tours, block parties, outdoor movies and more.

    • Be a part of a group of like-minded individuals trying to protect and bring up East New York and Brownsville.

    • Pay monthly dues to help sustain the ENYCLT. Please reach out if financial hardship is a concern.

    • Attend monthly General Membership Meetings.

    • Participate actively in at least one sub-committee or coalition.

    • Represent the ENYCLT in the community.

    • Grow our movement by inviting neighbors, friends and allies to become members.

  • Your membership dues help pay for our operations and organizing. They are an important way to make sure the East New York CLT can continue to support you and your neighbors!

    $5 monthly or $60 annually
    $10 monthly or $120 annually
    $20 monthly or $240 annually
    $40 monthly or $480 annually

    Please let us know if you are unable to pay right now, we never want money to be a barrier to participation. If you are able to pay a higher rate per month, please do!

MEETING & COMMITTEE SCHEDULE

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

WHEN: First Saturday of every month from 12 – 2 pm

WHERE: In person at various ENY locations. Subscribe to our email list or follow us on Instagram or Facebook for updates!

ABOUT: These meetings are an opportunity for the entire membership to come together to share updates, discuss our campaign work and vote on key organizational decisions. Open to all members and those interested in membership.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH

WHEN: Second and third Wednesdays from 7 – 8 pm (virtual)

ABOUT: Our goal is to educate others about the CLT model, grow our membership & develop new leaders. We do this by:

1) Connecting with residents of East New York & Brownsville through outreach and workshops.

2) Planning community events and fundraisers such as the annual Autumn Soiree, bingo nights, block parties and more.

POLICY, ADVOCACY & ORGANIZING

WHEN: Biweekly on Fridays at 4 pm (virtual)

ABOUT: We draft and advocate for legislation that supports the growth of the CLT movement. We are currently fighting for the Community Land Act (CLA) – City council bill package that includes three bills:

1) Public Land for Public Good

2) Community Opportunity to Purchase Act / Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA/TOPA)

3) Abolish the Tax Lien Sale

JUSTICE FOR THE JEWEL STREETS

WHEN: Biweekly on Thursdays at 4 pm (virtual)

CO-CHAIRS: Debra & Niani

ABOUT: We organize with residents in the Jewel Streets area to push the City to:

1) Install a sewer system to relieve all the residents who still rely on septic tanks

2) Design & install robust green infrastructure & a resilient rainwater drainage system

3) Transfer the city-owned 17-acre vacant lot in the Jewel Streets area to community ownership.

LAND ACQUISITION & SPECULATION

WHEN: Biweekly on Tuesdays at 4 pm

CO-CHAIR: Ivi

ABOUT: We support tenants’ campaigns to take control of their buildings by conducting research on the worst speculators and landlords in the neighborhood. We find details relevant to our organizing, including information on lenders, related business interests and violations across the portfolio.
